LEXICON
Like all professions, Starfleet possesses a vocabulary all its own. This lexicon is
included to aid you in being understood, and understanding, your co-workers. It is not
meant to be all-inclusive.
ABAFT - Farther aft.
ABOARD - In or on a ship.
ADRIFT - Loose from moorings - out of control or lost.
AFT - Toward the stern.
AFTER - That which is farthest aft.
AMIDSHIPS - Indefinite area midway between bow and stern.
ARMAMENT - Ship's weaponry.
ASTERN - Directly behind a ship. Bearing 1800 Mark 00.
ATHWART - Across, at right angles to.
AUXILIARY - Extra, or secondary.
AYE AYE - Reply to a command or order meaning I understand and will obey.
AZIMUTH - See bearing.
BACK - To go backwards.
BANK - Pair (or larger group) of similar weapons, fired as a unit.
BEAM - The extreme breadth of a ship
BEARING - The direction of an object from an observer; First measured in degrees clockwise
from dead ahead along the ship's X-Y Plane. Second measured in degrees upward or downward
from said X-Y plane.
BELAY - Order to disregard a previous order, or stop an action.
BELOW - Downward from a position.
BERTH - Mooring space assigned to a ship.
BILLET - Place or duty to which one is assigned.
BOARD - The act of going aboard a ship A group of persons meeting for a specific purpose.
BOOM - A spar for deploying equipment.
BOW - The forward end of a vessel.
BRIDGE - Area in the superstructure from which the skip is controlled.
BRIG - Starfleet term for jail.
BROAD - Wide.
BULKHEAD - A vertical partition.
BUOY - A free-floating independent object used as an aid to navigation.
BURDENED VESSEL - That vessel which does not possess right-of-way.
CABIN - Living quarters aboard ship.
CADET - Student officer at Academy.
CHART - Space-going counterpart of a map, showing stellar positions and lanes of traffic -
usually holographic.
COLORS - Federation or Planetary flag. Command to raise or lower same.
COMMUNICATOR - Personal transceiver
COMPANIONWAY - Deck opening giving access to a ladder or stairway.
COMPARTMENT - Interior space of a ship
CONN - Station on the bridge from which ship is controlled. The act of so controlling.
COURSE - A ship's desired direction and path of travel, not to be confused with heading.
DEAD-AHEAD - Directly ahead of a ship Bearing 0000 Mark 00.
DECK - Horizontal partition in a ship
DEPARTMENT - Minor subdivision of a ship's crew.
DIVISION - Main subdivision of a ship's crew.
DOCK - Any structure which serves as a mooring point for a vessel. The act of so mooring.
DRAFT - The extreme length of a ship,
DRIFT - The deviation of a ship from its original course or position.
DRY-DOCK - A dock which is equipped to re-fit or re-build ships.
ENERGIZER - The apparatus which converts raw energy from the reactor into electrical power
for the vessel
ENGINES - All inclusive term referring to a ship's powerplant and propulsion systems.
FABRICATOR - Older Matter/Energy scrambler used for manufacture / disassembly of
foodstuffs and materials.
FANTAIL - The after end of a hangar
FLAG OFFICER - An officer of the rank of commodore or higher.
FLAT - Grating or partial deck to provide walking and working surfaces, used extensively
in engineering spaces.
FLEET - An organization of ships and structures, all under one command.
FORE - Toward the front.
FRAME - The secondary structural member of a ship's hull
GALLEY - Space where foodstuffs are manually prepared.
GENERAL QUARTERS - The condition of full readiness for battle.
GIG - Auxiliary craft assigned for the commanding officer's personal use.
HANGAR - Space used for landing and launching auxiliary craft, and the parking of same.
HARD-OVER - Extreme turn to one side.
HATCH - Removable cover to a gangway.
HEAD - Compartment containing refresher facilities.
HEADING - The direction toward which a ship is facing at any instant.
HELM - Station from which a ship is maneuvered.
HELMSMAN - Person who maneuvers the ship.
HOLD - Large cargo space aboard ship.
HULL - The outer shell of a ship.
INBOARD - Toward the centerline.
JURY RIG - Any makeshift device or repair.
KEEL - The main strength members from which the frames and hull plates depend.
LAUNCH - To maneuver a vessel from dock or planetary surface.
LIBERTY - Permission to be absent from ship or duty for a pre-determined time.
LOG - Record in which data or events that occurred during a watch are stored.
MESS - Compartment where meals are eaten.
MIDSHIPMAN - Student officer aboard ship.
MOOR - To anchor or make fast to a dock or other structure.
NADIR - Directly underneath. Bearing 000o Mark -900
ORDNANCE - General term applying to major weaponry systems and control.
OUTBOARD - Away from centerline.
OVERHAUL - To overtake another ship. To undergo massive repairs to a ship.
PHASER - General term applying to a phased tachyonic Particle beam weapon.
PITCH - Rotation on y-axis.
PORT - To left of centerline when facing forward. Bearing 2700 Mark 00. A major spaceship
landing field.
QUARTERMASTER - Head of the ships services department.
QUARTERS - Living spaces aboard ship.
RANGE - The distance of an object from the observer or the vessel.
RELIEVE - To take the place of another
RIG - To set up any device or equipment.
ROLL - Rotation on x-axis.
RUNNING LIGHTS - Navigational lights mounted on outer hull of any Vessel.
SCUTTLE - Round airtight hatch.
SENSOR - General term for any device which Gathers data.
SHAKE DOWN - The training of a new crew. The trial run of a prototype, or a vessel having
undergone re-fit.
SHIP - Any large spacegoing vessel capable of extended independent operation.
SHIPSHAPE - Neat, clean, taut.
SHORELEAVE - Extended liberty on a civilian planetary or space location
SICKBAY - Shipboard medical spaces and facilities
SIDE BOY - One of a group of personnel who form two ranks at the gangway or transporter
room as part of ceremonies conducted when visiting officials come aboard.
SKYLARK - To engage in irresponsible behavior.
SMALL CRAFT - General term applied to any less-than-ship-sized vessel.
SPACESHIP - General term applied to smaller ships.
SPANNER - A tool used to fasten and decouple equipment.
SPLINE - Straight, curved, or crooked line tracing ship's course in three dimensions on a
chart.
SQUADRON - A fighting unit composed of 15 - 20 auxiliary craft.
STANCHIONS - Girders used to support bulkheads, attached to frames.
STAND BY - Prepare for.
STARBOARD - To right of centerline when facing forward. Bearing 0900 Mark 00.
STATEROOM - A living compartment for any officer.
STATION - A crewmember's place of duty Position of a ship in a formation.
STERN - The after-most part of a ship
STOW - To store or pack articles or cargo in a space or container
SUPERSTRUCTURE - Ship modules not mounted within the main frame members.
TENDER - A vessel that acts as a support ship for other ships.
TRANSPORTER - Matter/Energy scrambler used for point-to-point relocation.
TRANSVERSE FRAME - Structural member which extends outward from the centerline or center.
TRICORDER - A hand-held multiple sensor recorder / analyzer Instrument.
TURBOLIFT - Elevator aboard ship, capable of both vertical and horizontal travel within to
turboshafts.
TURN IN - Retire to quarters. Return articles to storage facility.
TURN OUT - Get out of bed. Order out a working party or other group.
TURN TO - Start work.
VEER - To swerve suddenly from previous heading.
VOID - An empty container. Outer space.
WATCH - One of the eight-hour periods into which a day is divided.
YAW - Rotation on z-axis.
ZENITH - Directly overhead, Bearing 0000 Mark 900.
